Events? - Yes, there are many! - Come in February and snag a front-row seat at readings and workshops by celebrated authors at the island's very own Literary Festival. On Canada Day (July 1st) catch the North Island Jamboree, a wonderful example of "old-time" Galiano. During the BC Day long-weekend (first weekend of August ), many galleries and private homes on Galiano host a special Art Show which features new work made especially for this event. And as well, our Island’s wonderful annual  Fiesta is on that first Saturday in August, the Wine Festival is mid-August and the celebrated Blackberry Festival is always the first Saturday in October, during Canada's Thanksgiving celebrations.

Make a Movie! - Budding filmmakers flock to our Island's award-winning Gulf Islands Film & TV School, which offers one- and two-week programs to students of all ages. From June through September, everyone can enjoy free Saturday screenings of student films each week.

Community Nettlefest Celebration
Date:
April 6, 4:00 PM to April 8, 9:00 PM

Are you interested in eating more local food and cooking with wild ingredients? Come spring, stinging nettles are among the first edible plants to burst from the ground in the Gulf Islands. In an intimate setting just an hour’s ferry ride from the Lower Mainland, join us for a fun celebration of local wild abundance on beautiful Galiano Island each spring and learn all about nettles—their health and nutritional properties, how to harvest them, and how to cook them.

This weekend of foraging and feasting includes several events such as a Nettle Cooking Class, Forest Foraging Walk followed by Community Nettle Harvesting, Galiano’s Next Top Nettle Cooking Competition, and the Community Potluck Celebration.

Pauline Le Bel, a resident of Howe Sound, embarks on a journey of discovery to find out what is special about the Sound, its wild nature and its people, to witness the cultural and spiritual revivals taking place. Her research, interviews, and travels compel her to abandon antiquated ideas about wilderness and community, and to arrive at a new appreciation for the genius of her home.
