Hummingbirds

There are more than 300 species of Hummingbirds worldwide. Their name is derived from the humming sound made by their wings flapping at 80 times per second. There are a few species that winter on Galiano. However, most of those seen on Galiano in the summertime have migrated from Central & South America. Their primary food is flower nectar. They also eat tree sap, insects & pollen. Put out a feeder containing sugared water and you will see as many as a dozen vying for their turn at the trough. To learn more about our resident & visiting “hummers”, have lunch or dinner at the Hummingbird Pub. On their printed menus you’ll find many pictures & descriptions of this incredible bird.
