Geena Powa Sutherland

Hesquiaht First Nations

Geena Powa Sutherland is a Nuu-Chah-Nulth and Coast Salish artist from the Hesquiaht First Nation, on the West Coast of Vancouver Island.  She takes great attention and reflection in developing her artistic talent based on her cultural teachings from strong family roots. Geena is a recognized leader in many First Nations communities.  Her understanding of ceremony and protocol guides her personal life and her artistic pursuits.  Currently, Geena is a Native Education Worker for Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council, working at the high school in Port Alberni’s School District 70.

Geena's love and respect for her culture and ancestry are clearly evident in her art. Her surroundings of the West Coast of Canada are shown boldly in her art. Her art is shared and gifted through traditional First Nations’ Potlatches as she continues to support community solidarity and strengthen bonds between First Nations Tribes, organizations and individual community members.

Geena Powa Sutherland graduated from Vancouver Island University with a Bachelor’s in First Nations. She has two sons and enjoys spending time with her large family of connections.  Geena continues to build a legacy for our future generations by sharing her gifts with many.

“My life and work are guided by my connections to the land and water.  My blood memory of family teachings and the places which hold my roots perpetuate these sacred understandings and messages in my artwork.”
