Bald Eagles
Locals commonly refer this bird as the Magnificent Bald Eagle. A bird of prey, with a wingspan of over four feet, they have been known to pick up a new born lamb and fly it to their nest to feed their young. They are also scavengers and help clean up our beaches of dead creatures. Unlike many humans, the Bald Eagles mate for life & are incredible parents. There are dozens of eagle nests on the island where a mating pair will return every year to raise their young. AND, did you know that they can SWIM? If an eagle picks up a fish that is too heavy and causes the bird to get its wings wet, they let go of the prey and use their wings (no web feet) to swim ashore. Once landed and their wings dry out, they are off again. It is truly a sight to behold!
